Sacramento Zoo Expansion Moves Forward: What’s Planned for William Land Park

A New Chapter for the Sacramento Zoo

One of Sacramento’s most recognizable attractions could be getting significantly more room to grow.

The Sacramento Zoological Society is pursuing an expansion of the Sacramento Zoo at its longtime home in William Land Park, following an amendment to its operating agreement with the City of Sacramento announced September 1, 2026. The agreement allows the Society to pursue an expanded footprint and represents an important step toward keeping the zoo in Land Park for the long term.

The zoo currently occupies just over 14 acres, a relatively small footprint that has limited its ability to create larger habitats and accommodate certain species. Earlier concepts explored adding approximately 5.8 acres, which would bring the zoo to roughly 20 acres.

For Sacramento, this isn't simply about making the zoo bigger. It's about what the zoo could look like for the next generation.

Why Does the Sacramento Zoo Need More Space?

Space has been one of the zoo's biggest challenges.

The Sacramento Zoo has been continuously accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1979, with its most recent accreditation renewal occurring in 2024. Zoo leadership has emphasized the need for additional space to improve animal habitats and create a sustainable future for the facility.

The proposed expansion could provide more room for improved habitats, guest experiences and other zoo operations while allowing the attraction to remain within William Land Park.

Concept plans released in May 2026 showed potential expansion areas around the existing zoo. Those plans have continued to evolve in response to community feedback, including changes intended to preserve existing park features.

What Happened to the Proposed Elk Grove Zoo?

If this story sounds familiar, there's a reason.

For several years, the plan was to relocate the Sacramento Zoo to a dramatically larger site in Elk Grove. The Elk Grove City Council approved that project in 2024, and the proposed zoo ultimately envisioned approximately 65 acres of zoological park at full buildout.

Those plans officially ended in April 2025.

The Sacramento Zoological Society cited economic uncertainty, increasing construction costs, future operating expenses and concerns about the project's long-term viability as reasons for ending the effort.

Attention then returned to the zoo's existing Sacramento home.

More Than Just a Zoo

The potential expansion matters because amenities like the Sacramento Zoo contribute to what makes a community attractive beyond the homes themselves.

William Land Park already brings together the zoo, parks, recreation and established Sacramento neighborhoods. An improved zoo could strengthen an amenity that families throughout the Sacramento region have visited for generations.

It also comes at an especially meaningful time: the Sacramento Zoo is approaching 100 years at its Land Park location.

For people considering moving to Sacramento, developments like this are part of the bigger picture.

Real estate isn't only about square footage, interest rates and home prices. It's also about where you live, what your family can do nearby and how a community continues investing in itself.

Is the Sacramento Zoo Expansion Official?

This is where the distinction matters.

The zoo has received authorization through its amended operating agreement to pursue the Land Park expansion, but that doesn't mean every element shown in conceptual plans is guaranteed to be constructed exactly as currently envisioned.

The earlier agreement was specifically structured to explore the expansion, conceptual designs, funding, community impacts and other requirements. Additional approvals and planning may still be required as the project develops.

So the most accurate takeaway right now is:

The Sacramento Zoo expansion is moving forward, but the final project is still taking shape.
